We’re thrilled to share a fantastic collaboration between AfriCoal SA and owlproject.org that’s making waves in local schools! Thanks to AfriCoal’s generous support - which covered travel, talks and the installation of owl boxes - our teams visited two Mpumalanga schools to inspire the next generation of environmental champions.
On 20 June, we were at Bonginsimbi High School in Witbank, and on 23 June, at Mehlwana Secondary School in Phola. Together, we brought the magic of owls to life, showing learners why these mysterious birds are not just fascinating but crucial allies in controlling rodents naturally.
At both schools, AfriCoal funded the installation of Barn Owl boxes, giving these incredible birds a safe place to nest right on school grounds. At Mehlwana, the excitement was even greater - Barn Owls and Spotted Eagle Owls are already calling the school home! We discovered owl pellets onsite, which sparked lively discussions about owl diets and their vital role in protecting township communities from pests.
This project wouldn’t have been possible without AfriCoal’s commitment to environmental education and community upliftment. Representing AfriCoal were Bernadette van Heerden and Chris Mkhonza, while our dedicated owlproject.org team - Sara Orchardson, Blessings Mkandawire, and Ntsane Mothibeli - led the educational talks and conservation work.
Owlproject.org is a passionate non-profit that’s been empowering township schools for nearly 20 years through hands-on owl education. They rely on donations and community partnerships to keep their mission alive. Find out more about their inspiring work at owlproject.org.
One teacher said it best: “It’s so important to educate the kids about owls.” We couldn’t agree more! Together, we’re building stronger, greener communities - one owl box and one curious learner at a time.
