📍 Jackal Creek Golf Estate | Conservation in Action
On the evening of the 27th of February 2025, Jackal Creek residents gathered for a truly heartwarming moment - the release of a Barn Owl (Tyto alba) back into its home territory after a successful rescue and rehabilitation.
Barn Owls face increasing threats, including secondary poisoning, habitat loss, and human-wildlife conflict. Every successful rescue is a victory for conservation. This story is a testament to the power of community involvement in protecting these incredible birds.
A Young Conservationist Steps Up 🦉
This journey began when young Gabriel, a Jackal Creek resident, spotted the owl grounded and in distress. Concerned, his mother, Angie Katsulis, reached out to owlproject.org. Within hours, Sara Orchardson from owlproject.org stepped in, collecting the owl and transporting it to Bryanston Avian, Exotic & Small Animal Clinic.
🔍 Diagnosis: X-rays confirmed no broken bones, and the owl remained feisty and eager to return to the wild. Once it was eating well and declared fit, the release was planned.
A Special Release for Jackal Creek 🌿
Word of the release spread, drawing Jackal Creek residents and its environmental team to witness the moment. Shelley Olivier, from the Jackal Creek management team, highlighted the estate’s commitment to conservation: “Jackal Creek is where we are learning to co-exist with our precious wildlife.”
Before the release, Sara Orchardson addressed the crowd, emphasizing the importance of returning wildlife to their original habitat: “Releasing wildlife back where they belong is critical for their survival and conservation.”
A Scientific Approach to Conservation 🔬
Adding to the significance of the release, Arjen van Zwieten, a registered bird ringer with SAFRING, guided Gabriel in placing an identification ring on the owl’s leg. This helps researchers track the owl’s movements and survival.
With Arjen’s guidance, Gabriel had the honour of releasing the owl. It soared confidently across the golf course, paused briefly, then disappeared into the trees - back where it belongs.
An Unforgettable Experience 🌍
For Angie and Gabriel, this was more than just a rescue—it was a moment of learning and connection with nature. Angie shared: “Rescuing and releasing the owl was a lifetime experience! My son learned to be conscious of wildlife through his uncle’s business, Vibing Gardens, where we work to be as eco-friendly as possible. Releasing the owl was definitely amazing!”
