Eagle owl receives treatment at wildlife hospital

According to the Owlproject.org, they received a call on 13 May concerning an injured eagle owl that was spotted grounded at Darrenwood Retirement Village. The organisation quickly responded and went the site to rescue it.

 


According to the Owlproject.org, they received a call on 13 May concerning an injured eagle owl that was spotted grounded at Darrenwood Retirement Village. The organisation quickly responded and went the site to rescue it.

According to the organisation’s Facebook post, the owl was rushed to the Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital where it was examined and found that it was infected by trichomoniasis, which is a protozoan infection prevalent in doves and pigeons which affects the upper respiratory tract of birds who contract it.

The Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital said on Facebook that the owl had obviously predated on an infection dove or pigeon and so contracted the disease.

The hospital added that the bird was treated for three weeks and the plugin its throat, which is most likely to be one of the symptoms of the disease, came out.

Project coordinator for the Owlproject.org, Delina Chipape said the owl has since recovered and has been released back into the area it was found at the retirement village. “I would like to thank the Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital for taking care of this majestic bird.”

Chipape also requested the community to continue to contact them if they spot other owls which might need to be their help.

“Since all the work that we do is pro-bono, our NPO is also calling out for donations to help us with these trips, especially in terms of the fuel costs.”
